Christiane Kues on her project for the Desk, Doing theory:
Theory and practice relations have determined definitions, differentiation, transgression and transformations since the turn to Conceptual art. Practice-based theory and research relates to critical epistemologies since the sixties until today. My current writing focuses on my thesis, which traces artist writings genealogically; and contextualizes perspectives of knowledge production to what has been described as the state of semio-capitalism or cognitive capitalism. Art theory anthologies, artists writings, journalism, art criticism, academic writing, PhDs, essays, speculative theory—all are combining fields of research between multiple disciplines. The debate about knowledge production in the arts is currently summarized and reduced to its institutionalization, academicization, or the surplus of higher education and new knowledge. My research at Project X Desk will engage with Los Angeles artists’ writings and their ideas about practice based theory.
On Wednesday March 18, Kues will host a panel discussion at the Armory Center on the intersection of art and theory in practice. Details to come!
Christiane Kues (1982, Wiesbaden, Germany) is a visiting German artist and PhD (Dr.phil.) student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria, working on academic writing, essays and art practice. Her research topic traces genealogies of Theoretical practice in the arts since the turn to the conceptual. She received a one-year travel grant to Los Angeles for art and research from the Cultural Foundation Hesse, Germany. Her work has been shown in several group shows in Winchester, Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Essen. She has published essays: Subject matter: Investing more time and energy in the logic of incongruence and the pleasurable game of text«, 2010, and, in collaboration with Sarah Kürten, I know why the cage bird sings, 2008 and Easy Living, 2007. She holds a Diploma from Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, Germany.
