As this turbulent election year draws to a close, we are exceedingly thankful for the community that supports and drives X-TRA. Forces gaining strength in the world dismiss critical thinking and the socially egalitarian positions that X-TRA champions. Now, more than ever, Project X and X-TRA remain committed to intelligent critical engagement with art and ideas.
Art isn’t easy. Please support X-TRA in your end-of-year giving.
Let’s batten down the hatches and keep Project X and X-TRA strong in these stormy times.
To encourage you to join or renew, every dollar contributed by Dec 31, 2016 will be matched by our special $20,000 Match put up by the Project X Board. If you’re already a member, give a little more for 2x the impact.
Artists and writers have an interdependent relationship, driving each other to make meaning of their work and the political, social, and psychological forces that shape contemporary art and discourse. X-TRA provides an independent platform for this exchange. At this moment of growth and transition in the LA art community, X-TRA’s archive is an important thread from the 1990’s to now—a historical record of twenty years and growing, with over 450 artist and writer contributors. Your support of X-TRA and Project X keeps us going strong as Los Angeles’ longest running art journal and directly supports artists and writers.
Project X Membership makes possible the full range of Project X’s offerings, not only through the publication of X-TRA, but also by sponsoring a great variety of public events, arts publications and artist editions.
2016 was a great year for X-TRA and Project X. Highlights in X-TRA: Nizan Shaked on William Pope.L; Susanna Newbury on Renée Green and Barbara Kasten; Leslie Dick on Sarah Charlesworth; Charles Gaines and Kerry Tribe in conversation on pedagogy; Artist’s Projects from Sarah Conaway, Claire Nereim, Patrick Staff and Mark Hagen. We hosted ten public events, including the first Meet & Greet, in partnership with Human Resources and LACA, which had over 400 attendees supporting artist-run orgs all over Los Angeles.
This coming fall marks the 20th Anniversary of X-TRA! Help us start our 20th year off with an X-TRA bang.
It will be a banner year, with high-profile essays and public events with artists Andrea Fraser, Malik Gaines, Michelle Grabner, Pope.L, Tracy Jeanne Rosenthal, Patrick Staff, A.L. Steiner, Martine Syms, and many others.
