A.L. STEINER
X-TRA ARTIST WRITES #1

FRIDAY JUNE 30, 2017

12  – 8pm**
reception, 8pm – 10pm

Hosted by:

WCCW2425 Glover Pl, Los Angeles, CA 90031

X-TRA is thrilled to present this special program with A.L. Steiner. The artist will present an 8-hr discussion and lecture in conjunction with her text “It’s Nobody’s Fault: Extinction of Consciousness and Everything Else,” to be published in the September 2017 issue of X-TRA, Volume 20 number 1. The presentation, comprised of a full 8-hr work shift, will explore the root — or radical — condition of beliefs that are established through the proliferation of mediated information systems.

**Attendees are free to come and go during 8-hour lecture.
Lunch and snacks provided!

This is the first event of ARTIST WRITES, part of X-TRA’s 20th Anniversary Programming. Artist Writes is a series of commissioned essays and public lectures by contemporary artists who write: A.L. Steiner, Andrea Fraser, Martine Syms, and William Pope.L. The essays will be published serially in X-TRA Volume 20. Each author will present a corresponding public lecture in Los Angeles. Artist Writes is a project firmly grounded in X-TRA’s mission to provide a platform for artists to define their own terms of engagement and to make meaningful contributions to the fields of criticism and theory in Los Angeles.

A.L. Steiner (b. Miami, FL, 1967, B.A., Communications, 1989, George Washington University) utilizes constructions of photography, video, performance and writing as seductive tropes channeled through the sensibility of a queer ecofeminist androgyne. Steiner is co-founder of Working Artists and the Greater Economy (W.A.G.E.) and MFA faculty at Bard College, Yale University and School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Steiner is based in Los Angeles and New York, and is featured in permanent collections such as The Brooklyn Museum of Art, Marieluise Hessel Collection of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, The Hammer Museum and The Museum of Modern Art.

The X-TRA ARTIST WRITES series is generously supported by The Michael Asher Foundation, Isambard Kingdom Brunel Society of North America, and the Pasadena Art Alliance. This fall marks the 20th year of X-TRA, Los Angeles’s longest running critical art journal.

Special thanks to WCCW for hosting!
