X-TRA accepts unsolicited submissions via email.
The X-TRA editorial board will consider submissions for publication. We also accept artist’s project proposals. Except under special circumstances, we do not reprint previously published pieces. Submissions are evaluated based on quality and their appropriateness to X-TRA. Writers should consider aspects of artistic production they feel are significant in the long term, eschewing newsy reports for more analytical inquiry.
Proposals should include an abstract outlining the central subject of the article or artist’s project, anticipated approach, images or other materials, as appropriate. Supporting documents required for articles: CV and writing samples, as links and/or attachments Please send submissions to the editors at: email@example.com
X-TRA is committed to publishing reviews that critically and thoroughly engage the work of art as it is experienced in the public sphere. Reviews should promote critical dialogue, rather than report on works of art. Reviews are generally 1500–4000 words.
Feature articles may consist of scholarly research; they may use an event, exhibition, book, video, etc. as a jumping-off point for a discussion of larger economic, political and cultural issues; they may be biographies of or interviews with artists or critics. Features range from 2000–10,000 words.
Columns may be written in a more “subjective” voice and may be on or about virtually any subject in the domain of visual art and cultural criticism. Columns are sometimes conceived of as ongoing or serial articles, but that is not a requirement.
Artists are invited to submit original ideas for direct-to-print artworks for publication. Proposals that address the content, context and format of the magazine are favored. Our pages are 9.75 inches tall x 6.5 inches wide; selected projects will be allocated up to eight pages. Proposals that incorporate a web-based element for publication at www.x-traonline.org are encouraged.
As of September 2015, writer's honoraria is $400 for reviews, columns, features and artist's projects fitting the guidelines above. Honoraria for special projects and other formats considered on a case-by-case basis. Payment is made upon publication.
