Kaari Upson — Clay baby spodomancy

Kaari Upson

My artist’s project, Clay baby spodomancy (2018), is a schema of a forthcoming performance based on a small porcelain divination object that my Oma gave to my mother, who in turn passed it on to me. After years of intending to make casts of the object but being unsure at what scale to do so, I finally came to the right decision.

Kaari Upson (born 1972, San Bernardino, CA) studied at the New York Studio School and received her BFA and MFA from California Institute of the Arts. Solo shows include the New Museum, New York (2017); Sprüth Magers, Berlin (2016); and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2007). Recent group exhibitions include Marta Herford Museum, Herford, Germany (2018); 15th Istanbul Biennial (2017), Whitney Biennial (2017); Hauser Wirth & Schimmel, Los Angeles (2016); Aïshti Foundation, Beirut, Lebanon (2015– 16); The High Line, New York (2015); Aspen Art Museum, CO (2015); Rubell Family Collection, Miami (2015); Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2014); CAPC Musée d’art contemporain, Bordeaux, France (2014); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2013); Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2013); and SITE Santa Fe, NM (2010).
